304 Stainless Vs. Aluminum Steel

Stainless steel and aluminum are metals used in the manufacture of products. Grade 304 stainless steel is the most common form of stainless steel used in industries in the U.S., other grades include 302 and 303 stainless.

Strength

  • Although often used for its light weight and strength, aluminum is not as strong as grade 304 stainless steel. In applications, such as automobile manufacture, steel provides a stronger material adding durability in vehicle collisions.

Uses

  • Grade 304 stainless is used in a number of applications, including architectural railings and trim, kitchen equipment and sinks. Aluminum is commonly used to manufacture foil, cans, airplanes and rockets.

Types

  • Both grade 304 steel and aluminum can be blended with other materials to alter their properties, improve the ability to weld the materials and enhance heat resistance. Grade 304 stainless can be produced in high- and low-carbon versions.
