How to Polish Stainless Steel Welds

Are you a new welder wondering how to get your steel welds to shine? Here we will discuss an easy and effective way to polish your stainless steel welds.

Instructions

    • 1
Preheat the weld by using an acetylene torch on high oxygen settings. Make sure to only quick-heat the weld. You do not want it to be red hot.
    • 2
If the weld is on a small, movable piece of metal, you must clamp it down before continuing. Use a pipe clamp for pipe welds or a table or bar clamp for other welds. Make sure that the weld is completely firm and secure.
    • 3
Use a standard metal brush grinder and gently begin to grind the weld. An effective way to do this nicely and thoroughly is to work from the high side to the low side, all the way around the weld. Keep in mind that the grinder is spinning so fast that you don't have to apply much pressure.
    • 4
Take a hand brush and scrub all cracks and crevices in the weld. While using this tool, you will have to apply much more pressure.
    • 5
Use an air compressor or a power blower to finish cleaning the weld. You will want to do a good job so that all metal and filler particles are removed for the polish.
    • 6
Apply steel polish to the weld with any kind of rag or polish pad. Rub it on slowly and evenly to get a nice, clean shine.
